I remember my first visit to the Utah State Capitol building. I was about 15 years old, and with my mom on a trip to Salt Lake City. We were there for just a day but one of the things we did was visit the capitol building. And I’m extremely glad we did!
The first thing you’ll notice is the huge rotunda and classical architecture. The design is built to be impressive, and is visible from many parts of Salt Lake City. It literally overlooks the city from Capitol Hill.
The style of the building is considered to be Neoclassical revival, in the Corinthian style. The building was designed by architect Richard K.A. Kletting, and was built between 1912 and 1916. It recently underwent a remodel and several upgrades.
The grounds around the capitol building are also worth exploring. There are numerous walkways and beautiful parks nearby, and the flowers are always a treat.
The building has been exclaimed as one of the most beautiful capitol buildings in the United States. To schedule a tour, you can email capitoltours@utah.gov or call 801-538-1800. Tours are offered on most days, including weekends. For more information, you can visit this page to get directions and tour information.
The building can be found at 350 North State Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84114.
